African American Lecture Series: “Red, Hot, & Blue Soul Radio”

Thursday, March 21, 2019 – 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Red, Hot, & Blue Soul Radio

The 1960s and 70s was the height of the Great Migration in which more than six million African American moved from the Rural South to large bustling urban cities in the Northeast, West, and Midwest. With this new rhythm of busting urban cities came the new sounds of some of the greatest musicians of our time from cities like Detroit, New York, Philadelphia. Although new to these cities, these movers and shakers got a brand-new grove by staying tune into the latest music on the radio and learning new moves including the Locomotion, the Shimmy, and the Boogaloo. Come to be transported back to this time as performers recreate one of the stations that would be the precursor to what would become known as Soul Train.

PRESENTERS: Antuan Hawkins, Sharon Mervin, Darryl Tindley, Jr., and Shillena Parks
