African American Lecture Series: “The Chicago Defender”
Jul 18 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
African American Lecture Series: “The Chicago Defender" @ Tryon Palace | New Bern | North Carolina | United States

The Chicago Defender has long served as one of the most recognized voices of African Americans. When mainstream newspapers did not cover the Black Experience, The Chicago Defender was there! Founded by Robert S. Abbott on May 5, 1905, The Chicago Defender hired their first full-time paid employee, J. Hockley Smiley in 1910. With Smiley’s help, the Defender attracted national audiences and addressed issues of national scope.  The Defender had more freedom to denounce issues outright, and its editorial position was very militant, attacking racial inequities head on. Sensationalistic headlines, graphic images, and red ink were utilized to capture the reader’s attention and convey the horrors of lynching, rapes assaults, and other atrocities affecting African Americans.

Presenters: Actor/Historian/News reporter Thomasi McDonald will demonstrate how The Chicago Defender became “A Beacon of Hope” for decades of African Americans fleeing the south.

The Fifes and Drums of York Town Performance @ Tryon Palace | New Bern | North Carolina | United States

On Friday, July 19, The Fifes and Drums of York Town will be performing on the Tryon Palace grounds. At 11:30 a.m., The Fifes and Drums of York Town will begin their march down the Grand Allée to the Tryon Palace South Lawn for their performance.

The Fifes and Drums of York Town was formed for the American Bicentennial Celebration in 1976. Today they continue their mission to recruit youth between the age of 10 and 18 and train them in the rudiments and drill of 18th Century field music.

A typical performance season consists of approximately 80 shows, many of which are conducted for the National Park Service and York County, as well as various historic venues along our Eastern seaboard including Mount Vernon, Washington D.C., Philadelphia and Valley Forge Pennsylvania, West Point, New York, and Boston, Massachusetts.

Our members dress in period uniforms. The goal of all members is to promote into the Senior Corps and wear the red regimental uniform reminiscent of the uniform worn by 18th century musicians who served in the Continental Army in Yorktown, Virginia…where Freedom was Won!

Marie Antoinette chronicles the reign, removal, and eventual beheading of France’s most infamous queen. The retelling of France’s iconic but ill-fated queen, Marie Antoinette, comes to life on the NBCT stage with mile high wigs and extravagant dresses. The story follows Marie from her betrothal and marriage to Louis XVI at 15 to her reign as queen at 19 and to the end of her reign as queen, and the fall of Versailles. Join The Saax Bradbury Players as Marie Antoinette delivers one of history’s most famous quotes. At some point around 1789, when being told that her French subjects had no bread, Marie Antoinette supposedly sniffed, “Qu’ils mangent de la brioche” — “Let them eat cake.”
