Andrew Rally seems to have it all: celebrity and acclaim from his starring role in a hit television series; a rich, beautiful girlfriend; a glamorous, devoted agent; the perfect New York apartment; and the chance to play Hamlet in Central Park. But there is trouble in paradise when his TV series is cancelled and Andrew really doesn’t want to play Hamlet. When Andrew]s agent visits him, she reminisces about her brief romance with John Barrymore many years ago, in Andrew’s apartment. This prompts a sèance to summon his ghost. From the moment Barrymore returns, dressed in high Shakespearean garb, Andrew’s life is no longer his own. Barrymore, fortified by champagne and ago , presses Andrew to accept the part and fulfill his actor’s destiny. The laughs are nonstop as Andrew wrestles with his conscience, Barrymore, his sword, and the fact that he fails as Hamlet in Central Park.

Civil War Weekend

The sights and sounds of the Civil War come to life during Tryon Palace Civil War Weekend on the grounds of the historic New Bern Academy, September 14 & 15. This event features an encampment of 35th Regiment of the United States Colored Troops, our state’s first regiment of African American Union soldiers, as well as the 7th North Carolina Regiment portraying the 44th Massachusetts Infantry. All Civil War Weekend activities are free to the public.

Saturday, September 14 (10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.)
The 35th Regiment of the United States Colored Troops will begin the day with a posting of colors. During the day, visitors will be able to witness food demonstrations and regiment drills, speak with the USCT members, explore a Union medical tent, and interact with Frederick Douglas.

At 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, all units will march to the Tryon Palace South Lawn for a rifle and cannon demonstration beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Sunday, September 15 (10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.)
The day will begin with a Sunday Camp Church Service with the USCT. Regiment drills, food demonstrations, and medical treatments will continue to be available to visitors.

Also, discover New Bern’s Civil War history through exhibits inside the New Bern Academy Museum, which will open to the public from 12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. on Friday and 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Barn Bash aids in meeting the financial gap for Promise Place ensuring important services remain available to the community.  Promise Place is the only Sexual Assault Resource Center serving 3 counties in Eastern North Carolina: Craven, Jones and Pamlico . Promise Place has been in operation since 1978 and offers: trauma-based counseling, advocacy, and community outreach.

Local country artist Bryan Mayer will be providing the entertainment for this years event!

Whether you love beach music, the glory days of crooners, or just want a way to help local veterans, nationally-known musicians from across the country are descending into New Bern this summer for the perfect mix of the three.

Bill Stafford of Stafford Entertainment & Talent and “Lewis n Clark,” made up of the married singing duo Von Lewis and Abbey Clark, are helping organize “Stars & Stripes,” a night of musical entertainment to benefit Whitehurst-Ware American Legion Post No. 539 in New Bern to celebrate the national organization’s 100th birthday.

The show, “Stars & Stripes,” is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. at Grover C. Fields Performing Arts Center, 2000 Dr. M.L.K. Blvd. Tickets sales will open to the public on Aug. 1.

Online tickets are $25 plus a $2.00 credit/convenience fee charged per ticket. $25 Tickets are available for CASH or CHECK only at Carolina Creations, 317-A POLLOCK ST. New Bern, NC- The seat choices are limited when buying in cash or check .

MC for the event will be Miss North Carolina 1975 & Miss America Runner-Up, Connie Dorn Rist — who was involved in classic USO shows. Comedian William White of Washington, N.C.’s I.C. Improv will be co-hosting the event.

Attendees will be able to get autographs and photos with the talent following the show.

Dubbed the “King of Country,” Hank Williams Sr. was one of the first country music superstars in the world, and helped to shape and define the genre for decades to come. Learning folk, country, and blues from the age of eight, Williams’ radio debut was at the age of 13, with his first band, Hank Williams and his Drifting Cowboys, at 14. Commercial success started in 1947 with “Move It On Over,” and was quickly followed by a total of 35 Top Ten Hits, 5 released posthumously after his tragic death at 29 of a heart attack. Hits include “Hey Good Lookin”, “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry”, and “Honkey Tonk Blues.”

Learn about the conservation work that is done to the artifacts on exhibit in the Governor’s Palace, North Carolina History Center and our historic house museums around Tryon Palace with Behind-the-Scenes tours of the Tryon Palace Conservation Lab.

Observe the techniques and tools the conservation staff uses to preserve items from the past to be showcased in the present and for future generations. Also, guests can learn about techniques they can use to care for their own treasures at home.

Space is limited on each tour and flash photography is prohibited. Tours may involve walking and climbing stairs.
