The Lasting Impact of the Barbour Boat Works Vessels of World War II
Nov 3 @ 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm
The Lasting Impact of the Barbour Boat Works Vessels of World War II @ Cullman Performance Hall in the North Carolina History Center | New Bern | North Carolina | United States

The Barbour Boat Works of New Bern became one of several shipyards in the United States contracted by the U.S. Navy to build fourteen naval vessels of which twelve ships would be delivered to the British Royal Navy for action in the European theater during World War II.  A couple of these vessels would be kept by the U.S. Navy and would see action in the Pacific theater in our fight against the Japanese.  The stories of these New Bern-built ships during World War II and their life afterwards in the ownership of other countries, demonstrate the lasting impact and value of Barbour Boat Works and the people who built them.

Rear Admiral Jay DeLoach graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1978 and served on submarines as well as several assignments with Naval Intelligence, 7th Fleet, and Joint Staff.  He earned three Masters degrees in Management, Nuclear Engineering, and National Security & Strategic Studies. He also served as an adjunct professor for the Naval War College and taught Joint Maritime Operations.  After retirement from the military, he became a member of the Senior Executive Service in the Department of the Navy and led the transformation of the Naval History & Heritage Command as its 12th Director from 2008-2012.  He is currently the State Secretary and New Bern Chapter President of the NC Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. Admiral DeLoach is also a direct descendant of the founder of New Bern, the Baron Christoph von Graffenried, his seventh great-grandfather.

Garden Lecture Series – November
Nov 9 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Garden Lecture Series - November @ Cullman Performance Hall, North Carolina History Center | New Bern | North Carolina | United States

“Plants Style”

Our November Garden Lecture features renowned plantsman Kelly Norris discussing “Plants with Style.” Gardeners need chic, sustainable, thriving plants for modern lifestyles. Why settle for lackluster gardens filled with dull, ho-hum plants? After all, plants are the very essence of fashionable gardening. In this spirited, provocative lecture, Kelly Norris calls for a garden revolution. Out with boring plants and in with stylish alternatives that captivate and enthrall!

A passionate horticulturist and lifelong gardener, Kelly is the ideal guide to the botanical riches available to today’s gardeners. In chapters on environment, structure, seasonal standouts, and plant combinations, he shines a spotlight on the A-list plants in every category—plants that will thrive, not merely survive. Along the way, he shows you how to forge a personal style in harmony with your garden’s setting and local environment. As Kelly puts it, “A garden is the best way to savor life on earth.” Allow “Plants with Style” to guide you to the plants that will provide a richer, more fulfilling connection between you and your own patch of soil.

This lecture is free and begins at 10 a.m. in Cullman Performance Hall at the North Carolina History Center. A “Plants with Style” book signing will follow at the NCHC Museum Store.

Tryon Palace Cultural Arts Series Presents "Letters From Home" @ Cullman Performance Hall in the North Carolina History Center | New Bern | North Carolina | United States

This November, Tryon Palace will pay tribute to the many military heroes in Eastern North Carolina with a patriotic night of USO-inspired singing, dancing, and comedy.  Letters From Home was started by Erinn Dearth at the suggestion of her late father, Pat Dearth, a veteran of the United States Coast Guard. Since that time, the group has made its mark performing in venues big and small across the United States, touching the hearts and caressing the memories of hundreds of thousands nationwide with their mission to honor our veterans, active military, and their families. Erinn and Dan Beckamnn, comedian and singer, take audiences on a trip down memory lane with 1940s-1960s music, singing, tap dancing, comedy, audience interaction and a variety of other surprises along the way. Please join us that evening in saluting our military heroes and celebrating our nation.
