Join Tryon Palace in celebrating National Pollinator Week June 18-23. Throughout the week, learn about how to help pollinators with posters and take-home items, and meet the bees in our observation hive at the NC History Center. There are three events taking place throughout this week. All are free events, “Pollinator Garden Tours” are free with purchase of One-Day, Galleries, or Gardens Pass.

During National Pollinator Week, Hadley Cheris, Tryon Palace Gardens and Greenhouse Manager, will be leading daily tours of the Palace Gardens. During the tours, Cheris will be discussing our favorite pollinator plants and those pollinators that can be found on the grounds.

Tours will take place on Tuesday, June 18 to Friday, June 21. All tours begin at 10 a.m. at the Waystation. “Pollinator Garden Tours” are free with purchase of One-Day, Galleries, or Gardens Pass.

The Great Trent River Raft Race is back AGAIN!  In the 70’s and early 80’s there was an event…an event that drew thousands to the shore of the Trent River to watch a spectacle like no other.  Hundreds of participants built homemade rafts and raced in The Great Trent River Raft Race.

A couple of decades later the race is back!

June 2018 saw the successful return of the race to New Bern NC – Folks from all over the State grabbed their paddle boards, jumped on their kayaks, built paddle and pedal rafts and got together with friends for a fantastic day of fun on the water!  The great news is…we’re back – AGAIN for 2019! Committee Member, as they discuss the importance of honey bees and what becoming a beekeeper entails.

This pollinator-themed lecture is free and begins at 10 a.m. in Cullman Performance Hall.

As part of the Great Trent River Raft Race, EOP will be there providing an epic water war and foam party!!!! Wear clothes that can get soaked and bring a towel….or two!

The water war will run from 11:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

NOTE: You WILL get drenched!

We will have two foam parties, each for 30 minutes:

1:00-1:30 PM
3:00-3:30 PM

We even may have some SLIME!!!! If you are willing to get slimed to raise money for Relay For Life of Carteret – Craven, let us know and we will tell you how you can sign up to take the challenge!!!! You may also nominate someone to get slimed — teacher, coach, boss, husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend, etc.!!!! Basically anyone who you think would be hysterical to get slimed!

The Saturday Sessions

The Saturday Sessions in Bear Plaza are rotating music and art weekends located in the heart of downtown New Bern, North Carolina. Saturday Sessions run from 1pm-5pm and begin Saturday April 6, 2019 and will run every Saturday until Mumfest weekend in October.

Special Saturday Sessions children’s programming is available. Between 1pm-5pm the second and fourth Saturdays indoors at the The Next Chapter Books and Art and the first and third Saturdays outside of The Craven Arts Council/Bank of the Arts, children of all ages are encouraged to paint #downtownNBrocks and hide them around town. The Craven Arts Council/Bank of the Arts will also be the host location of Saturday Session Storytimes held the second and fourth Saturdays at 1pm and 3pm. Please join us as books about community, nature, and neighborhood are shared alongside beautiful local works of art on display.

Please join us in this immersive cultural community experience. All are welcome. Please keep in mind there is always something for the kids to do, rain or shine, in participating downtown venues.

Tryon Palace’s African American Heritage Tour explores the history and heritage of more than 20 historic locations around downtown New Bern.

New Bern served as a haven for many African Americans during the early stages of the Civil War after Union forces occupied New Bern in 1862. The city’s African American population was the majority population in the area from 1800 to the 1930s. Conditions like this allowed the African American community to thrive in New Bern. Many of the city’s houses and public buildings were built by African American craftsmen, while the city was also home to some of the oldest African American congregations in the Southeast.

The Tryon Palace African American Heritage Tour will be offered March to November, with the exception of July and August. Tours begin at the Waystation, located on the corner of George and Pollock streets, at 2 p.m.

At the Gallery: Season Finale

Join us for a special encore presentation of the At the Gallery series.  The 20th Century American Composer Season Finale will draw from the songbooks of all eight of this season’s preceding performances, performed by Ken Kennedy. This night promises to be a wonderful experience, allowing the audience to compare and contrast performance of the same composers’ hits by a different musicians.  ​

​A native of North Carolina and resident of High Point, Ken Kennedy has spent his lifetime singing and playing music.

As the vocalist for the Piedmont Airlines, later the US Air Jazz Orchestra, he consistently amazed audiences throughout the world in his engagements at the Grand Casino, Deauville, and Paris, France; London; Frankfurt; Wiesbaden; Konigswinter, Germany, as well as most major cities in the USA.  He sang for a distinguished audience, which included then Vice President George H. W. Bush, when the Space Shuttle Enterprise was donated to the Smithsonian Institution.  Upon the Vice President’s recommendation, he later entertained at the Southern Governors’ Conference in Charlotte.  He also sang successively before then ex-President George H. W. Bush and then First Lady Hillary Clinton at the prestigious Congressional Medal of Honor Society meetings. He was the featured vocalist in the “Down Home with the Carolina Pops” tour with the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra, during which he performed the music of a number of North Carolina artists in styles ranging from bluegrass to jazz.  He recently was a guest artist on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee.
