Fans of Outlander series may now travel in Claire Fraser’s literary footsteps in the Governor’s Palace, located in New Bern, the first permanent capital city of North Carolina. Meet with the servants who can offer enlightenment as to the facts regarding Claire’s place within the household, and other 18th century news.

Ticket quantities are extremely limited. Tour will begin at the Waystation at 9:15 a.m. Tickets do not include additional tours or access to the Tryon Palace Grounds. Tickets will go on sale a month before the tour date and are non-refundable and cannot be altered or exchanged.

There is now a different afternoon tour, “Discovering Tryon Palace: Outlander Hearth and Home” at 4:15 p.m., featuring the Tryon Palace Kitchen Office and Garden. Learn more about the new tour and “Outlander Tour Bundles” here!

The Saturday Sessions

The Saturday Sessions in Bear Plaza are rotating music and art weekends located in the heart of downtown New Bern, North Carolina. Saturday Sessions run from 1pm-5pm and begin Saturday April 6, 2019 and will run every Saturday until Mumfest weekend in October.

Special Saturday Sessions children’s programming is available. Between 1pm-5pm the second and fourth Saturdays indoors at the The Next Chapter Books and Art and the first and third Saturdays outside of The Craven Arts Council/Bank of the Arts, children of all ages are encouraged to paint #downtownNBrocks and hide them around town. The Craven Arts Council/Bank of the Arts will also be the host location of Saturday Session Storytimes held the second and fourth Saturdays at 1pm and 3pm. Please join us as books about community, nature, and neighborhood are shared alongside beautiful local works of art on display.

Please join us in this immersive cultural community experience. All are welcome. Please keep in mind there is always something for the kids to do, rain or shine, in participating downtown venues.

Art session is from 1-5 in Bear Plaza includes jeweler Elisa Schulman, reiki master and massage therapist Catherine Ould, art demo by Claudina Madrid, intuitive Tami Sigfried, and more!

June 15:

Bring a chair and join us for Music Session in Bear Plaza! FOLKS Journal courtesy of Toyota New Bern is proud to present local family band Strung Together from 1pm-2:30pm. Swiss Bear is proud to present NC Songwriters Co-op band Tiny House from 3pm-5pm.

June 22:

Art Session from 1-5 includes henna artist Mehak Minas, reiki master and massage therapist Catherine Ould, various artists and demonstrations from Uptown Gallery, intuitive holistic services provided by Tami Sigfried, watercolor and acrylic oyster art by Erin Droese Designs, free family yoga from 1-3 courtesy of Hope Boucher from A Hopeful Balance, and many more!

The Discovering Tryon Palace series presents “Outlander Home and Hearth.” This tour will give you the skills you need as you meet the Governor’s Cook for a few tips on seasonal fare, get advice from our local Apothecary or Surgeon, and learn about the fabrics best suited for this southern colony with one of our on-site weavers.

During National Pollinator Week, Hadley Cheris, Tryon Palace Gardens and Greenhouse Manager, will be leading daily tours of the Palace Gardens. During the tours, Cheris will be discussing our favorite pollinator plants and those pollinators that can be found on the grounds.

Tours will take place on Tuesday, June 18 to Friday, June 21. All tours begin at 10 a.m. at the Waystation. “Pollinator Garden Tours” are free with purchase of One-Day, Galleries, or Gardens Pass.

Tryon Palace historic clothing interpreter Leslie Lambrecht will lead a tour of the historic Jones House with a brief description of the house and then through the Tryon Palace Costume Shop on the first floor of the house. The costumer will discuss historical clothing research, the sewing techniques used in the past, and current projects for upcoming events.

Space is limited on each tour and flash photography is prohibited. Tours may involve walking and climbing stairs.

The North Carolina Symphony Orchestra returns to Tryon Palace for its annual free concert on the picturesque South Lawn.

This concert is presented in partnership with the New Bern series of the North Carolina Symphony. Gates open at 5 p.m., performance begins at 7:30 p.m.

To enjoy music in this beautiful waterfront setting that borders the Trent River and is surrounded by beautiful gardens, Tryon Palace invites you to bring your own chairs, blankets, and dinner, but please leave pets and alcoholic beverages at home.

 

In the event of rain, the back-up location is Temple Baptist Church (1500 Kingdom Way, New Bern, NC 28560)

Folks Journal and City Stage New Bern are pleased to announce their 2019 events partnership in bringing New Bern an evening of Literature & Poetry every 3rd Tuesday from 7pm-9pm. Local poet and co-founder of FOLKS Journal Meg Wethington / Meg Wethington, Poet will be your host for the evening. Authors of all genres will be given 10 minutes to read on stage using a microphone from their works. Sign up begins at 6:30. Published authors will have the opportunity to have their books available for sale- authors, please bring your books and materials you will need to be responsible for the purchase/selling of any of your books. A table will be provided for display at the front of the stage where purchases can be made. The City Stage serves as the host venue for this free FOLKS Journal event. More than 400 educators, business leaders, community members, and elected officials will fill the Havelock Tourist and Event Center on Tuesday, June 19, 2019, for the Partners In Education Spring Luncheon. This annual event supports and recognizes teachers who won PIE Grants during the 2018-19 school year. PIE awarded over $200,000 through a variety of grants and programs during the 2018-19 school year.

Don Brinkley, President of Craven County Partners In Education’s Board of Directors, announced that the luncheon will feature Col. Todd Ferry, Commanding Officer, MCAS Cherry Point, as keynote speaker.

Doors open at 11:30 am for seating with the event beginning at Noon. Tickets are $30 per person. The Chelsea Restaurant is catering. John Bircher, attorney with White and Allen, will emcee the event. This event is open to the public.

Mr. Brinkley explains, “The luncheon is an excellent opportunity for our community to show their support of Craven County Schools, our public school educators, and administrators. PIE Grants are awarded to teachers for creative and innovative projects in Craven County Schools classrooms and to fund materials for technology, science, music, and art projects, along with supplies and books for our students.”

The mission of Craven County Schools is: Together with our families and community, Craven County Schools will educate all learners to personal, professional, and civic success through challenging and personalized instruction.
