African American Lecture Series: “Red, Hot, & Blue Soul Radio”

Thursday, March 21, 2019 – 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Red, Hot, & Blue Soul Radio

The 1960s and 70s was the height of the Great Migration in which more than six million African American moved from the Rural South to large bustling urban cities in the Northeast, West, and Midwest. With this new rhythm of busting urban cities came the new sounds of some of the greatest musicians of our time from cities like Detroit, New York, Philadelphia. Although new to these cities, these movers and shakers got a brand-new grove by staying tune into the latest music on the radio and learning new moves including the Locomotion, the Shimmy, and the Boogaloo. Come to be transported back to this time as performers recreate one of the stations that would be the precursor to what would become known as Soul Train.

African American Heritage Tour
Mar 23 @ 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

African American Heritage Tour

Saturday, March 23, 2019 – 2:00pm to 4:00pm

Tryon Palace’s African American Heritage Tour explores the history and heritage of more than 20 historic locations around downtown New Bern.

New Bern served as a haven for many African Americans during the early stages of the Civil War after Union forces occupied New Bern in 1862. The city’s African American population was the majority population in the area from 1800 to the 1930s. Conditions like this allowed the African American community to thrive in New Bern. Many of the city’s houses and public buildings were built by African American craftsmen, while the city was also home to some of the oldest African American congregations in the Southeast.

The Tryon Palace African American Heritage Tour will be offered March to November, with the exception of July and August. Tours begin at the Waystation, located on the corner of George and Pollock streets, at 2 p.m.
