Get Ready to Run for Pancakes!
Join TWIN RIVERS YMCA for our Pancake Pursuit 5K and 10K on Saturday, May 18, 2019, at Taberna Golf and Country Club.  Our 5K route is perfect for families, strollers, and leashed dogs and will be open to timed and untimed runners and walkers.  The 10K is geared towards the competitive runner and is open to timed runners only.

Cost:
5K: $33 (by April 30) and $38 (beginning May 1) transaction fees are included in price
10K: $38 (by April 30) and $43 (beginning May 1) transaction fees are included in price

Kid’s Dash: $15, Children 12 and under will race the 40 yard dash and give it all they can! All Kid’s Dash participants will receive a t-shirt and medal.

Awards will be given to the top overall 3 male & 3 female finishers for each race, 5k & 10k.

Age Groups (5K): 9 & under, 10-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70 & over, top overall dog jog and top overall stroller run.

Inclement Weather Policy
Have Questions? You may visit our registration table or approach anyone in a bright yellow volunteer shirt.
· Parking is free. Parking will be available in the Subdivision of Taberna.
· Dog owners – all dogs must be on a fixed / non-retractable leash, and owners are required to pick up after their dogs throughout the duration of the event. Poop bags and trash cans will be available and dog water stations will be available along the route.

Bern Garden Plein Air Event

Join us for the first ever Bern Garden Plein Air Event from 9am to 1pm on May 18th, 2019.
– This new event will feature artists of all mediums creating and designing new works inspired by the natural beauty of New Bern at three locations: Union Point Park, Tryon Palace Outer Gardens, and the Master Gardeners Cooperative Extension Garden.
– Artists of all mediums are encouraged to apply at www.cravenarts.org by May 10th to be a part of the event.
– Organized by Craven Arts Council & Gallery, Carolina Creations, and the Craven County Master Gardener Association, the event is open to artists of all mediums and free for the public to attend.
– The artists will work on creations on site inspired by their surroundings at the three locations. Artwork will be offered for sale through through Craven Arts Council. Artworks requiring drying/firing/finishing or other extended times will be offered for sale in the “wet paint” fashion common to other plein air events, allowing the customer to pay now and pick the work up at a later date when completed. Finished works by the artist will be featured in an exhibition at Carolina Creations June 14- June 29.

Fans of Outlander series may now travel in Claire Fraser’s literary footsteps in the Governor’s Palace, located in New Bern, the first permanent capital city of North Carolina. Meet with the servants who can offer enlightenment as to the facts regarding Claire’s place within the household, and other 18th century news.

Ticket quantities are extremely limited. Tour will begin at the Waystation at 9:15 a.m. Tickets do not include additional tours or access to the Tryon Palace Grounds. Tickets will go on sale a month before the tour date and are non-refundable and cannot be altered or exchanged.

There is now a different afternoon tour, “Discovering Tryon Palace: Outlander Hearth and Home” at 4:15 p.m., featuring the Tryon Palace Kitchen Office and Garden. Learn more about the new tour and “Outlander Tour Bundles” here!

The Saturday Sessions

The Saturday Sessions in Bear Plaza are rotating music and art weekends located in the heart of downtown New Bern, North Carolina. Saturday Sessions run from 1pm-5pm and begin Saturday April 6, 2019 and will run every Saturday until Mumfest weekend in October.

Special Saturday Sessions children’s programming is available. Between 1pm-5pm the second and fourth Saturdays indoors at the The Next Chapter Books and Art and the first and third Saturdays outside of The Craven Arts Council/Bank of the Arts, children of all ages are encouraged to paint #downtownNBrocks and hide them around town. The Craven Arts Council/Bank of the Arts will also be the host location of Saturday Session Storytimes held the second and fourth Saturdays at 1pm and 3pm. Please join us as books about community, nature, and neighborhood are shared alongside beautiful local works of art on display.

Please join us in this immersive cultural community experience. All are welcome. Please keep in mind there is always something for the kids to do, rain or shine, in participating downtown venues.

Mentored by none other than Oscar Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim would go on to become one of the best known names in musical theater, winning eight Tony Awards, an Academy Award, eight Pulitzers, a Grammy, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. His best known works as composer and lyricist include “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “Sweeney Todd,” and “Into the Woods,” among others. He also wrote the lyrics for “West Side Story” and ” Gypsy.” Hits include “Pretty Women,” “Everybody Ought the Have a Maid,” and “Maria.”

Andrea Owens is a singing, songwriting, actress and fiber artist.  A native of Rockport, Massachusetts, she studied dramatic arts and vocal performance at Emerson College in Boston and the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Recently she was the Managing Director of Ratio Theatre Company, where she was also a member of the acting ensemble and was featured in the casts of Let’s Fly Away, Songs for a New World, Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris and Side by Side by Sondheim.  Most recently Andrea played the role of Abuela Claudia in New Bern Civic Theater’s production of In the Heights.

Judy Harrison has performed with the Ratio Theatre’s “Side by Side by Sondheim,” “Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris,” and “Songs for a New World” programs.  Judy first came to the Old North State as a graduate student.  While at UNC-Chapel Hill she was keyboardist with the University Symphony.  Then at UNC-Greensboro she was opera and music theater accompanist.  Most of her professional career was spent in the Washington, DC, area in teaching and church music.  She was music director of the Washington Revels for 15 years, with performances at Lisner Auditorium and appearances at the Smithsonian and the White House.  Upon hearing Phil and Andrea Owens making music in 2009, Judy realized that New Bern would be the perfect place for permanent residence.  She is pianist and music director at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of New Bern.
