Exhibit: The Story of BBQ in NC
Jan 19 @ 9:00 am – Mar 24 @ 5:00 am
Exhibit: The Story of BBQ in NC @ North Carolina History Center | New Bern | North Carolina | United States

In North Carolina, we love our tasty, regional, home-grown barbecue. From the earliest history of cooking meats over flames and coals to modern methods, North Carolina has a proud barbecue tradition, featured at family and community gatherings across the state. Whether at a backyard grill, a community event, or a traditional wood fire pit at a local restaurant, delicious barbecue can be found in every North Carolina county and in every corner of our history.

The Story of BBQ in North Carolina explores how growing and cultivating hogs emerged in North Carolina. The exhibit also fuels the east versus west debate about sauces and condiments, even as explains that the eastern vinegar base and the western tomato ketchup enhanced versions really are not that different. Visitors will leave hungry so be sure to have a list of local BBQ joints on hand!

Accompanying educational materials will include play kitchens for the youngest visitors and will explore healthy eating options.

The “The Story of BBQ in N.C.” Exhibit will be open to the public January 19, 2019 to March 2019 in the North Carolina History Center.

The Story of Ghent Encore Presentation
Jan 29 @ 6:00 pm
The Story of Ghent Encore Presentation @ North Carolina History Center | New Bern | North Carolina | United States

So many folks wanted to hear John Leys The Story of Ghent that the Historical Society event sold out back in December! Don’t worry, though, John has been prevailed upon to give an encore of this popular presentation on Tuesday, January 29th at 6pm at the North Carolina History Center in partnership with Tryon Palace. Doors will open at 5pm. Reserve your seat with a suggested $10 donation; all proceeds go to Historical Society’s educational programs. Call the New Bern Historical Society at 252-638-8558. This event is open to the public.

No wonder people are interested! The Ghent neighborhood has a lively and vibrant past. This is the story that John Leys will share. Leys explains “The Story of Ghent will take us back to the days when Ghent was developed from the Rhem family plantation and explain how the neighborhood grew with the introduction of the trolley. We’ll remember all the fun the children had with the coming of the circus. Let’s not forget the Casino with sports events, dances, rides and concessions. Who remembers that the famous Gorgeous George had a wrestling match there?! We’ll talk about architecture and a few notable residents. Over the years Ghent has had a significant influence on New Bern, and we hope will continue to far into the future.”

Ghent resident John Leys came to New Bern after finishing his graduate degree at East Carolina University in 1975 and taught French, History and English in the New Bern school system. After retiring as a teacher he worked at the Craven County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the New Bern Public Library, and Tryon Palace. An active volunteer with the Historical Society, he served on the Board of Directors as the Historian, recently stepping down after ten years of service. John has done extensive research and writing, and written scripts for and acted as a ghost in Ghostwalk and Haunted Evening productions. He has appeared in many productions at the Civic Theatre and was on the founding board of the Rivertowne Players. John loves New Bern and thinks it has some of the nicest people in the world!

When the French-African couple Paul
and Sali discover the longed-for baby
they are about to adopt is white, family
chaos and confrontation ensue. With
joy, Paul and Sali adopt the baby but
initially keep his ethnicity a secret from
their family. On the one side, there
is a social worker whose prejudice
drives her surprise visits, seeking faults
in the home or familial environment,
and on the other is the baby’s
adopted grandmother, doing what
this West African mother does best –
exaggerating everything! Luckily, she
does this to great comic effect. This
film brings to light obvious assumptions
people hold about race and culture –
and turns them on their head!

First Friday: Developing First-Person Interpretation @ North Carolina History Center | New Bern | North Carolina | United States

Join Living History Program Coordinator Matt Arthur for a look at the research that goes into developing a character (whether historical or composite), how we use characters to teach about individuals and groups of peoples (i.e. Gov. Martin and wig makers in general), and then the finer point of character development, like 18th century language that helps sell a person as the real deal.

Willie E. Atkinson & Transitional Jazz Quintet – The Poetry of Jazz Concert
Feb 15 @ 7:30 pm
Willie E. Atkinson & Transitional Jazz Quintet - The Poetry of Jazz Concert @ Orringer Auditorium New Bern CCC Campus

Explorations in the ARTS presents Willie E. Atkinson (vocalist) and The Transitional Jazz Quintet will present an evening of soulful ballads and up tempo jazz classics. This Poetry of Jazz concert should prove to be just the ticket for sharing a musical evening with your valentine!

An extraordinarily smooth Jazz vocalist, Atkinson makes each of his performances a unique and unforgettable experience for his audience with his fluid interpretation of Jazz and Blues standards. Whether exploring the syncopated rhythms of a swinging tune or telling the story of a lonesome, wanting heart, he offers a fresh approach and seizes every moment to make the songs his own.

Renowned Jazz critic Peter Ingram, CVNC Online Arts Journal in North Carolina, begins his jazz review of a recent concert stated, “They (the audience) basked in the “jazz poetry” interpretations that vocalist Willie Atkinson gave to mostly swing era standards.” And ends with… “He certainly inspired the audience to standing ovations at this concert!”

The Transitional Jazz Quintet is: Stephen Anderson, UNC Chapel Hill, piano; Phil Owens, New Bern, guitar; Doug Trammel, Myrtle Beach, bass; Michael Hanson, Rocky Point, percussion; and Jeff Bair, East Carolina University, saxophone. Guest jazz vocalist is Liz Pina of Wilmington, NC.
