Exhibit: The Story of BBQ in NC
Jan 19 @ 9:00 am – Mar 24 @ 5:00 am
Exhibit: The Story of BBQ in NC @ North Carolina History Center | New Bern | North Carolina | United States

In North Carolina, we love our tasty, regional, home-grown barbecue. From the earliest history of cooking meats over flames and coals to modern methods, North Carolina has a proud barbecue tradition, featured at family and community gatherings across the state. Whether at a backyard grill, a community event, or a traditional wood fire pit at a local restaurant, delicious barbecue can be found in every North Carolina county and in every corner of our history.

The Story of BBQ in North Carolina explores how growing and cultivating hogs emerged in North Carolina. The exhibit also fuels the east versus west debate about sauces and condiments, even as explains that the eastern vinegar base and the western tomato ketchup enhanced versions really are not that different. Visitors will leave hungry so be sure to have a list of local BBQ joints on hand!

Accompanying educational materials will include play kitchens for the youngest visitors and will explore healthy eating options.

The “The Story of BBQ in N.C.” Exhibit will be open to the public January 19, 2019 to March 2019 in the North Carolina History Center.

At the Gallery: Randy Newman
Jan 26 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
At the Gallery: Randy Newman @ Bank of the Arts | New Bern | North Carolina | United States

At the Gallery: Randy Newman
January 26, 2019

The nephew of 3 Hollywood film score composers, Randy Newman is widely known for his film scores and compositions, as well as his distinctive voice and satirical songwriting. His 1968 self titled debut album received critical acclaim and praise from other musicians, but never achieved Billboard success.  Newman has received twenty Academy Award nominations, and twice won the “Best Original Song.” He composed the scores for “Toy Story,” “Ragtime,” “Cats Don’t Dance,” and numerous other live action and animated movies. Hits include “You’ve got a Friend in Me,” “Short People,” and “Feels Like Home.”

The Heather Pierson Trio burst onto the national folk scene in 2015 with their debut EP, “Still She Will Fly.”  It features the multi‐genre songwriting, instrumental arrangements and stirring three-part vocal harmonies.  The title track was the #2 single on Folk radio in 2015.

Heather Pierson (lead vocals, piano) is an award-winning singer/songwriter and performer.  With eight previous solo recordings, Heather’s wise-beyond-her-years songwriting, angelic voice and world-class chops have catapulted her into the spotlight.

Davy Sturtevant (cornet, dobro, fiddle, mandolin, harmony vocals) is a veteran touring artist, songwriter, and performer.  Armed with a gorgeous tenor voice, Davy is at once a witty, thoughtful and engaging musical presence.

Shawn Nadeau (bass, harmony vocals) brings a rock solid thump and nearly two decades of performing experience to the trio, informed by a wide spectrum of unique rhythmic and melodic sensibilities ranging from rockabilly to reggae to jazz.

Returning to our “At the Gallery” series following their amazing performance of the music of James Taylor in March 2018, we’re happy to welcome the Heather Pierson Trio back to present the songs of Randy Newman.
