FAMILY FUN

Kids adore eastern North Carolina, and it's for good reason: there's so much to do when they're here. New Bern and Havelock offer a variety of activities throughout the year. Outdoor parks, museums and exhibits, farms, and more will keep them busy day after day. Kids and adults alike will love activities that bring them together, like skating, bowling, movies, and pottery. There are plenty of things for kids of all ages to do in and around New Bern, Havelock, and Craven County.

Creekside Park

 width=Creekside Park is a hub for New Bern's recreational fun for both kids and adults. Located on 111 acres adjacent to the Coastal Carolina Regional Airport, Creekside is home to the New Bern Area Soccer Association, Babe Ruth Girls' Softball, Sunday School Baseball, Special Needs Baseball, adult men's and co-ed softball, and adult kickball. There are three playgrounds designed for children ages 5-12 years of age, as well as a sand volleyball court, picnic shelters, a walking trail, and more. Plus, the waterfront area offers canoe and kayak access, a gazebo, a picnic shelter, and walkways to Brice's Creek. It's one of New Bern's best places to play.

Kidsville

 width=Kidsville at Seth West Parrot Park is an active and interactive environment that helps kids explore their imagination. This beautifully planned environment has a fort-like setting that allows kids to slide, swing, run, and climb through twists, turns, climbing frames, and more. The park is also home to the West New Bern Recreation Center, which features four tennis courts, two lighted baseball fields, two lighted little league fields, three field houses with restrooms, a lighted basketball court, and a picnic shelter.

New Bern Firemen's Museum

 width=Explore the history of North Carolina fire fighting at the New Bern Firemen's Museum. This museum houses a collection of early fire fighting equipment, along with rare photographs and Civil War relics. You'll hear stories of Fire Horse Fred and learn why the Dalmation is the official fire dog. Not only is New Bern proud to be the first city in North Carolina to charter a fire company, but it was also one of the first in the nation. Plus, the city's fire fighters hold many world records. This museum offers a distinct look into a respected piece of the city's past.

The Accidental Artist

 width=Families of all ages will enjoy spending an afternoon at the Accidental Artist, a paint your own pottery studio located in downtown New Bern. Come in, pick an item to paint, and look for inspiration from templates, stamps, clip art, or a host of idea books. No experience is needed, and it's suitable for all ages. If you're in from out of town, don't worry - the staff at Accidental Artist can ship your items back home for you. Reservations are encouraged but not required. Reserved seating is also available.

Cow Café

 width=The Cow Café is a New Bern favorite for good reason. Located at 319 Middle St. in historic downtown New Bern, this cow-themed restaurant and ice cream shop might just be the happiest place in eastern North Carolina. The café features more than 500 kinds of cow gifts, a dining area surrounded by murals of farm scenes, a moving train, and a large barnyard play area complete with rocking cows, tractors, and more. Best of all, you can watch ice cream being made in a small, glassed-in production room. Choose from almost forty flavors of homemade ice cream. Fort Totten Park & Field

 width=Tucked between Neuse Boulevard and Trent Road on Fort Totten Drive is the five and one-half acre Fort Totten Park. It's the perfect spot for get-togethers with family or friends. For the little ones, a modular playground and tot lot make a visit to the park unforgettable. For something more competitive, challenge your friends to a game of ball on the lighted softball field. Fort Totten Park has a picnic shelter with grills and picnic tables for any size gathering. Restroom facilities and street side parking are also available for added convenience.

Havelock Tourist & Event Center USMC Aviation Exhibit

 width=The Havelock Tourist & Event Center is an exciting aviation exhibit that features eastern North Carolina's history of Marine Corps aviation. Explore a permanent display of scaled aircraft models and historic photographs. Five restored aircrafts - a Douglas A-4M Skyhawk, a McDonnell Douglas RF-4B Phantom, a Grumman F9F-6P Panther, as well as a replica of an early Boeing F4B-3 biplane and a large scale AV-8B Harrier - are on loan from the U.S. Marine Corps and Department of the Navy. Scaled models depicting the aircraft lineage of the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing at Cherry Point from its inception in 1942 are also on display. This piece of exciting military history is not to be missed.

Read-To-Me Storytime

 width=The New Bern-Craven County Public Library offers a variety of programs that provide both pure entertainment and the opportunity to learn for children of all ages. Time Out for Toddlers is a 20-minute program for children ages 18 months to 3 years that includes books, rhymes, fingerplays, songs, and puppets. Kids ages 3-5 will enjoy Preschool Storysteps, which offers stories, music, puppetry, and more. And Children's Story Hour, an after school adventure that features storytelling and creative activities, is for ages 5-10. Kids will love to explore, play, and read at the library.

Union Point Park

 width=A trip to New Bern isn't complete without a trip to Union Point Park, which is a scenic six-acre site located at the point of the Neuse and Trent Rivers in historic downtown. The Gazebo - often used for weddings, festivals, and other special events - offers a magnificent and breathtaking view of the waterfront. Craven Smart Start Resource Lending Library

 width=Craven Smart Start Resource Lending Library is a unique library designed specifically for young children. Well stocked with children's books and toys, the library also features monthly play and learn sessions for children and parents, as well as a resource/toy check out system. Free, monthly Plan and Learn sessions for children and parents, which are regular features at the library, include an activity such as art, reading, finger plays, as well as a snack. Annual memberships are $10, which goes back to the library to help purchase new items.

Foscue Plantation

 width=Located in Pollocksville, the Foscue Plantation is a majestic reminder of a period in time more than 200 years ago. The house has been meticulously restored to its original construction in high-style antebellum décor that showcases a number of original furnishings. If you want to step back in time and find out about a fascinating tale of love and war and the strength of a Southern family, you have come to the right place! With three floors and a working basement, cemetery, garden, forest, plantation land, and the Trent River at the back of the property, there is much to see.
